A new Democracy Corps survey has found that the Republican Party has begun 2012 by falling into state of near collapse, as over 50% of those polled gave the GOP a negative rating.

The Democracy Corps poll found three reasons for the Republican decline. The candidates for the Republican presidential nomination, the unpopular Republicans in Congress, and the GOP’s attempts to revive the culture wars with the religious liberty and contraception issues. Fifty percent of those surveyed gave the Republican Party a negative rating. A majority of both seniors (54%) and Independents (52%) now have negative feelings towards the GOP.

The Republicans in Congress have set the tone of negativity towards their party. Sixty eight percent of voters had negative opinion about congressional Republicans, which is a 22 point increase over the past 12 months. Seniors have made the biggest move against congressional Republicans going from a 45%-43% net positive rating to a net 28%-66% disapproval of congressional Republicans. Independents have also turned on the congressional Republicans. Last year, 45% of Independents disapproved of congressional Republicans. Today, that number has jumped to 71%.

It may take a defeat in 2012 before the Republicans reorganize and make their party nationally viable again. What this means for 2012 is that a perfect storm of unpopular Republicans pushing unpopular policies could lead to big Election Night for Democrats. It is still eight plus months before the election, but Republicans are digging themselves a hole that they might not be able to get out of before November.

They took their Tea Party victories in 2010 as this big mandate to do big things that they have wanted to do for some time. Problem is, what the people thought they were voting in wasn't what they got. Jobs, small government, lower taxes flew out the window for big government when it comes to a uterus or bedroom, big government when it comes to receiving federal funding for safety net programs, NO taxes which will ultimately increase the debt unless they pile it on the backs of the working poor and disadvantaged, and ultimately, any job program that President Obama was promoting was bad, bad, bad.

They have pushed this mandate, obviously still drunk on the heady brew they think they are still drinking, to the extreme limits of the extreme.

People woke up, Occupy Wall Street emerged, and things are going to turn around. I'm really, really hoping that the push back to the Tea Party (astroturfed as it was) "mandate" will get this country back on a track to prosperity. The R's don't have a clue, as evidenced by all the assault on women's health issues and rights, and will be painted in to a very small corner. I'm really, really hoping they will wake up on the morning after and will be saying, "oops....". If they keep this up, they will be politically irrelevant for another 20 years!

They didn't have the presence of mind to take advantage of their house majority except to obstruct, but I'm certain they have the presence of mind to recognize Obama is blowing out of the water.......BTW 20 years is not long enough.

I said a decade on another thread, they have done so much wrong that they have decades of reparation to do before they can be considered competent again.

that the republicans won the midterms only 2 years after they were pummelled though just shows how short peoples memories are. It is really hard to predict what is going to happen if they get pummelled again.

IMO there is no question that the GOP as it currently exists cannot survive, and is so close to supporting outright fascism that it should not.

That said, I don't think that long-term rule by Democrats will lead to paradise---all that stuff Lord Acton said about absolute power and corruption is true. My hope is that the so-called RINOs will stand up and take the party back from the loonies but nothing short of resounding political rejection (Democrats in control of the White House and the Congress) will energize them. They have their work cut out for them, and the job before them will take a few years.

IMO, the question is this: can the RINOs retake and reshape the GOP before the we find ourselves beneath the heels of an entrenched, hyper-corrupt Democrat oligarchy, as opposed to the entrenched, hyper-corrupt two-party political oligarchy we have now, that is?

Clearly sooner rather than later, We the People are going to have to totally clean up the political system in this country...or else.

Maybe by that time you'll see additional parties with candidates running.

I think that a GOP housecleaning will be more in order, but it will take a real @!$%# kicking for them to do it. Problem is that there are many, especially in the south, that will vote republican even if the candidate is dead, which makes it hard for the party trust to get a clue because they see that they still get a lot of votes.

By the way things are going, by the end of the day on election night in Nov of 2012, the GOP/TP will have all the relavance of the WHIG party. Between what the GOP/TP is saying and doing, what the remaining candidates are saying, it will indeed be a VERY long time before they can re-gain any kind of relavency.

Well... Let's all do our part to help them along on their journey back to the wilderness. Being a gentleman... I'll get the door for them.

Don't be overconfident as this race hasn't even gotten started yet and the GOP has lots of money at it's disposal... Let's chew their ass all the way to the first Tuesday in November shall we?

I wouldn't say "death" as much as irrelevancy in the short-term. It could mean death, if the party doesn't do a little self-reflection in regard to how far this country has bypassed the party, and their stubborn insistence on clinging to failed policy and their utter disregard to keep pace with the country.

Their co-opting the teabags was the beginning of the end. It was easy to see two years ago, but if it was mentioned, a wave of epithets and other verbal abuse was what one got in return. What the GOP counted on was a "new" perspective, but one doesn't get that from people who are dead-set on going BACKWARDS.

Now the GOP are stuck with their position. They cannot find the courage to admit failure and start anew, but continue with intransigent thinking, believing that the country will somehow come to it's senses, as they destroy any attempt to improve the economic situations of those they want to convince.

If they STAY the course they're on, death may very well be in the interest of the party, and this country.

I hope they are digging themselves a hole they never recover from..... It is possible Dems can take back the house and gain a larger majority in the senate. Let the republicans keep up what they are doing, they will find, they do not represent the American people in the end.....

You are absolutely correct.... Independents and Dems are fed up with this obstructionist philosophy of attempting to take down a sitting president which in my view surmounts to treason warranting prosecution..... Repubs were elected to work for the American people, since being elected they have worked for their own interest along with special interest and screw the American people.... This party needs eradication....

If the party is largely eradicated, then that would be sad for america as there needs to be a credible opposition for any democratic system. Now having said that, if it happens, it would be largely self inflicted, as the republican party has essentially become the party for the extreme, and not for the nation.

Jonathan......You're absolutely right we do need credible opposition, but we also need folk who are willing to do the job they were sent there to do, and stop with the rhetorical nonsense. When and if this becomes a burden then the door should meet them where the Toilet Seat greets them.
